OBJECTIVE
The objective for this project was to create a brochure for a company that provided electronic symbol collections for graphic design professionals. The brochure was to promote the company’s latest eight-volume CD collection of various design elements as a comprehensive, high quality, unique encyclopedia of design elements that would be essential tool for any designer. One of the requirements for the design was for it to be unusual, interesting, and appealing to serious, discerning graphic design professionals. The brochure had to incorporate clip art images in a manner that would clearly represent the look and feel of all eight volumes while preventing copyright infringement.
PROCESS
While thinking about the suitable format and design that would correspond to the image of the collection that the client wanted to portray, focus was on finding an idea, a theme for the project that would get the job done. Initial idea was to talk about the building blocks of graphic design (contrast, repetition, proximity, alignment) while presenting the eight different volumes as symbols burned into the sides of the wooden building blocks. However, that didn’t quite work well as it wasn’t unusual and elegant enough to appeal to the target audience and to carry the message that the client wanted to project with the brochure. Instead, the design took a different course and, since it presented an eight-volume CD collection, it was turned into a circular design, a wheel which could be rotated to show the type of symbols found on each of the CDs, with the clock hand on the front pointing to the specific volume.
