OBJECTIVE
The goal for this project was to create a cover and inside spread designs for a coffee-table hardcover book about sneakers as collectibles. The book was meant to be a comprehensive reference book and a collectors’ must-have, holding valuable information for both novices and experienced sneaker collectors. Research showed that collecting sneakers was a very masculine pastime. With the target audience being male urban population aged 15 to 35, ranging from high school and college students to young, hip professionals, the keywords directing the design decisions were: cool, hip, trendy, modern, a must-have, movement, and great performance.
PROCESS
The main challenge of this project was to create an attractive layout for a book that any avid sneaker collector would love to have on his coffee table (target audience was mostly male). Non-traditional document size (larger width than height) was used to suggest forward movement. Lots of white space was utilized, condensing the most important product information for easy skimming. Placement of images in relation to body copy was decided while keeping in mind the goal of achieving effective communication and control of the viewer’s path through designed spreads.
