OBJECTIVE
The objective for this project was to create posters for Atlanta Ballet’s new performances, Giselle and Scheherazade. Both ballets are remarkable works of grace and beauty, great achievements of the Romantic era during the 19th and early 20th century. The main task for the poster designs was to capture the essence of that time, the romantic ideals and the extravagant theatricality of the ballet performances characterized by an emphasis on subjective emotional qualities and freedom of form and movement.
PROCESS
Since both ballets were created during the Romantic era of the 19th and early 20th century, it seemed natural to draw the inspiration for the poster designs from the Art Nouveau style which developed in the late 19th century. This organic, curvilinear, and highly decorative style that often incorporated floral and other plant-inspired motifs seemed ideal for capturing the romance that Giselle and Scheherazade exuded with. The design process included a lot of research of the Art Nouveau style and artists such as Alphonse Mucha, Gustav Klimt, and Louis Comfort Tiffany.
