DESIGNRES' IDEATION BOOK Alternate views: 00 01 02 03 04 05
OBJECTIVE
Through research, I found that the majority of graphic design students and young professionals devoted very little of their project production time to sketching even though they believed in the importance of sketching as part of the ideation process. Most of them admitted that their level of confidence (or insecurity) in their own sketching skills affected how often they used their sketchbooks. The disappointment when they couldn’t successfully express their ideas on paper acted as a deterrent. These findings led me to believe that there was a real need for Designers’ Ideation Book, a collection of fun daily sketching and creative thinking exercises that would help students get in the habit of sketching while improving their conceptual thinking and, by default, their sketching skills.

PROCESS
Since this book was supposed to appeal to young graphic designers, the following keywords were the guiding light though the creative process: experimental, messy, unique, informal. Being informal, approachable, and easy to use were the most important goals for this book. Since it had to work as a sketchbook, the format had to be on the smaller side to make it easy to carry around. Collage art and textured backgrounds were utilized to add to the sense of informality and freedom to sketch without any hang-ups. Sketches, handwritten notes and Informal fonts (decorative for headings and Optima for body copy) were used for much the same reason.
